Labour Party gives Peter Obi 48 hours to step down over his role in ADC opposition alliance.
The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour deadline to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging him to formally resign from the party after joining a new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
On Wednesday, Obi was officially presented as one of the prominent figures in the ADC-led alliance, which gathers influential politicians preparing to contest President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated re-election in 2027.
In a statement made on Thursday in Abuja, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, described the newly formed coalition as a “gathering of power seekers” and accused Obi of double-dealing by keeping ties with the Labour Party while affiliating with a rival political movement.
“We’re aware of several covert meetings between Peter Obi and certain members of our party, persuading them to follow him to his new platform,” Ifoh stated. “A good number of them have already declined his approach.”
Ifoh firmly stated that the Labour Party remains unaffiliated with the ADC-led alliance and would not accept divided loyalties or deceptive affiliations.
“Any member of the Labour Party involved with this coalition is expected to resign within 48 hours,” he declared.
He went on to criticize Obi’s popular “New Nigeria” message, describing it as unrealistic when pursued alongside what he termed “recycled and frustrated politicians.”
According to Ifoh, nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population consists of young people who are weary of outdated politics. He emphasized that achieving a truly new Nigeria is only possible through the Labour Party.

He urged party loyalists to remain committed to the Abure-led leadership, describing it as the genuine vehicle for progressive, youth-driven change.
Peter Obi’s involvement in the ADC coalition aligns him with several notable political players, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
During the official unveiling of the coalition on Wednesday in Abuja, former Senate President David Mark was named interim national chairman, while Aregbesola was appointed interim secretary. The alliance is widely considered a significant third-force initiative aiming to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections.
