Rivers State Police Probe Fire Incident Leading to Man’s Death in Choba
The Rivers State Police Command has begun an investigation into a disturbing fire incident that took place at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt, resulting in the death of a 32-year-old man, Saint Sunny Amadi.
According to a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, on Tuesday, the victim was allegedly set ablaze by his girlfriend, Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student at the University of Port Harcourt. The tragic incident occurred inside a room, leaving Amadi with critical injuries.
Following the incident, the victim was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where he later passed away while receiving treatment. The Rivers State Police confirmed that their officers visited both the scene and the hospital immediately after receiving the report at about 11:12 a.m.

The police spokesperson disclosed that Cynthia, who is currently pregnant with the deceased’s child, also sustained injuries during the incident and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Due to her critical condition, she has been unable to give a full account of the event but is expected to do so once her health improves.

Iringe-Koko explained that while the exact cause of the fire has not been determined, the Rivers State Police have launched a full-scale investigation to uncover the details surrounding the case. She assured the public that further updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Police Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has called on residents to stay calm, assuring them that justice will be delivered in due course.
