Trump Issues Final 60-Day Gaza Ceasefire Ultimatum

Trump Calls on Hamas to Embrace 60-Day Gaza Truce Proposal Amid Rising Tensions

On Tuesday, July 1, US President Trump called on Iran-backed Hamas militants to accept a “final proposal” for a 60-day ceasefire with Israel in Gaza. The offer is expected to be delivered by mediators from Qatar and Egypt.

In a statement on social media, Trump revealed that his team held a “long and productive” session with Israeli officials concerning the Gaza conflict. Although he did not specify which representatives attended, US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance were scheduled to meet with Ron Dermer, a senior aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to Trump, Israel has agreed to the ceasefire terms, which would allow all parties to work towards a resolution of the conflict. Mediators from Qatar and Egypt are set to present the “final proposal” to Hamas.

“For the good of the Middle East, I hope Hamas accepts this deal because it won’t improve it will only deteriorate,” Trump stated.

Speaking to reporters earlier that day, Trump expressed optimism about achieving a ceasefire-for-hostages agreement between Israel and Hamas by next week. He is scheduled to meet Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.

While Hamas has shown willingness to release remaining hostages under a ceasefire deal, Israel insists the conflict can only conclude with Hamas’ disarmament and dismantling terms the group continues to reject.

The war, ignited by a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages, according to Israeli sources. Despite negotiations, both sides remain firm in their positions.

The US plan proposes a 60-day ceasefire and the release of half the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the remains of others.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed Israel’s acceptance of the US-backed deal, placing the responsibility on Hamas to respond.

Trump and his administration are attempting to leverage recent US and Israeli military actions on Iranian nuclear sites, along with a ceasefire from the previous week, to secure a broader truce in Gaza.

During a Florida visit, Trump emphasized he would take a “very firm” stance with Netanyahu on the urgency of a Gaza ceasefire, while noting Netanyahu’s own desire for an end to hostilities.

“We’re hopeful it’s going to happen. We’re aiming for next week,” Trump told the press. “Our goal is to free the hostages.”

Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry reports over 56,000 Palestinian fatalities from Israel’s military response since October 7. The offensive has triggered widespread hunger, displaced Gaza’s population, and led to international legal accusations of genocide and war crimes against Israel—charges the country rejects.
