U.S. Adjusts Visa Reciprocity Policy for Nigerian Citizens
The United States government has announced a significant revision to its non-immigrant visa policy for Nigerian nationals, restricting the majority of these visas to a single entry with a validity period of three months.
In an official statement released by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria on Monday, it was confirmed that the new visa reciprocity policy takes immediate effect and covers most non-diplomatic visa categories. Importantly, visas already issued will remain valid until their designated expiration dates.
Effective immediately, most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas granted to Nigerian citizens will be single-entry with a three-month validity period,” the statement declared.
This policy adjustment aligns with the U.S. government’s standard global practice of periodically reviewing visa reciprocity arrangements. Such reviews are designed to reflect the treatment American citizens receive when applying for visas in other countries. The State Department emphasized that reciprocity schedules are subject to change, potentially extending or limiting entry permissions and stay durations.
Additionally, the U.S. government reaffirmed that this revision is consistent with international immigration regulations and security frameworks. Among the guiding principles for visa policies are the issuance of secure travel documents with verified identities, effective visa overstay management systems, and robust information-sharing protocols on criminal and security-related matters.
The U.S. Mission is collaborating with the Government of Nigeria to help meet the necessary criteria,” the statement added.

While acknowledging the efforts of Nigerian authorities to meet international travel standards, the U.S. reiterated its commitment to maintaining and enhancing the longstanding bilateral relationship between both nations.
The United States places great value on its enduring partnership with Nigeria and remains dedicated to expanding collaboration based on mutual respect, shared security interests, and economic opportunities,” the U.S. Mission affirmed.
Nigerian travellers were also advised to strictly comply with their visa conditions and ensure their travel documents are “authentic, accurate, and current.”
Despite the adjustments to visa terms, the U.S. expressed optimism for continued cooperation with Nigeria in areas such as trade, education, and cultural exchange.
