High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is one of the leading health challenges in Nigeria today. It is often called a “silent killer” because many people don’t know they have it until it causes serious problems like stroke or heart disease. One major cause of rising blood pressure is what we eat every day.
In Nigeria, some popular foods we enjoy can quickly push our blood pressure levels higher without us realizing it. Here are five common ones you should watch out for:
1. Salted Foods (Too Much Maggi and Salt)
Most Nigerian meals are loaded with seasoning cubes, salt, and stock. Excess salt increases sodium in the blood, which makes the heart work harder and raises blood pressure.
2. Fried Snacks (Puff-Puff, Meat Pie, Buns)
Street snacks are tasty, but they are usually fried in oil with high fat. Eating them too often can clog the arteries and cause hypertension.
3. Red Meat (Suya, Pepper Soup, Goat Meat)
We love our suya and pepper soup, but red meat contains saturated fat, which can raise cholesterol levels and blood pressure if eaten too much.
4. Instant Noodles
Quick and affordable, but instant noodles are packed with salt and artificial seasoning. Regular consumption is a silent trigger for high blood pressure.
5. Alcohol (Palm Wine, Beer, Spirits)
Many Nigerians enjoy weekend drinks, but alcohol raises blood pressure and damages the heart if taken excessively.
You don’t have to completely avoid these foods, but moderation is key. Reduce salt, balance your diet with fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, and exercise regularly. If you already have high blood pressure, check your meals carefully and follow your doctor’s advice.
