Reports recently surfaced claiming that Akume had stepped down as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to assume the role of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the Presidency on Saturday night clarified that former Benue State Governor, Akume, continues to serve as the SGF.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, released a statement saying there had been no change regarding Akume’s position.
He stated, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments.
The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue,” Onanuga added.
On Friday, June 27, 2025, a former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, resigned as APC National Chairman, leading to Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, stepping in as Acting National Chairman.

While APC spokesman, Felix Morka, cited Ganduje’s need to attend to urgent personal matters as the reason for his resignation, insiders believe his exit followed growing internal opposition, particularly from members dissatisfied with his appointment which they considered a breach of the party’s zoning formula.
Dalori, hailing from the North East, will temporarily occupy the role until the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) convenes to officially appoint a new National Chairman.

Ganduje, representing the North-West, became APC Chairman in August 2023 after the resignation of his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu, from the North Central zone.
Ganduje previously served as Kano governor from May 2015 to May 2023. In January 2025, President Tinubu appointed him as Board Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
