Trump Signals Frustration With Putin Amid Escalating Violence in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump on Friday hinted at possible fresh sanctions against Russia after what he described as a tense and frustrating conversation with Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I wasn’t pleased with my call with President Putin. He wants to continue the violence — it’s unacceptable.
Trump, who has drawn criticism for his softened stance toward Moscow since returning to office, suggested his administration’s patience was wearing thin.

“Sanctions are always on the table,” he noted. “He knows that could happen soon.”
The remarks came as concerns rose in Kyiv over delayed military assistance from Washington and Russia’s intensified attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that he and Trump held what he called a “strategic conversation” to discuss bolstering Ukraine’s air defense systems.
Zelensky also alluded to potential collaborative arms production with the US, focusing on modern drone technology. “We thoroughly discussed defense industry partnerships. It’s vital for our security,” he said.
The two leaders also touched on mutual procurement initiatives, possibly referring to Germany’s plan to acquire air defense systems from the US to support Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia unleashed one of its largest aerial strikes since the start of the conflict, launching hundreds of drones and missiles toward Ukrainian territory, with significant attacks aimed at the Khmelnytskyi region’s military facilities.
Following Thursday’s phone call, Trump had already expressed disappointment. “It’s clear he has no intention of ending this war,” Trump said.
Additionally, Trump confirmed speaking with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about delivering Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine but refrained from confirming any immediate decisions. “Merz believes Ukraine must be protected,” Trump remarked.
