Atiku Resigns from PDP, Says Party Has Lost Its Direction
In a decisive move that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party he helped found.
Atiku, who represented the PDP as its presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, submitted his resignation letter to the chairman of Jada Ward 1 in Adamawa State, dated July 14, 2025. His media team confirmed the development, which signals a significant realignment within the country’s opposition forces.

The former vice president expressed deep regret over the decision, calling it one of the most difficult of his political career.
“Having served two terms as Vice President and twice contested for the presidency under the PDP, my journey with the party is deeply personal,” Atiku said. “But current realities and irreconcilable differences compel this difficult choice.
Atiku resigns from PDP. His departure, though emotional, comes as little surprise to close observers of Nigerian politics. In recent months, Atiku has actively engaged opposition figures in forming a new political coalition aimed at mounting a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources confirm that the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) has now been adopted as the official platform for this emerging alliance, positioning Atiku at the heart of what may become the most organized opposition bloc heading into 2027.
