The event took place last Saturday when Gbenga and his friends challenged each other to carry multiple cement bags. The reward for the winner was their mobile phones.
Each bag weighed about 50kg, bringing the total weight to 200kg—almost three times the average man’s body weight.
Driven by adrenaline and the urge to prove himself, Gbenga took on the challenge. A viral video shows him managing to lift the bags momentarily before collapsing under the immense weight. Eyewitnesses said the strain caused immediate damage to his spine and nervous system, leaving him immobile and struggling to speak.
His friends, visibly alarmed, rushed to assist by pouring water on him and trying to lift him up, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Despite desperate attempts to save him, Gbenga’s condition worsened, and by Wednesday, he sadly passed away from the injuries. The news has left his family, friends, and community in mourning.
Commentators stressed that no prize or moment of validation is worth risking one’s health or life, urging young people to think carefully before engaging in such reckless challenges.
